In the end, good lighting design comes down to what you're trying to achieve.
When someone has a lot of art, the space needs more art lights and the ability to tone down the general lighting. Other times, it doesn't matter because a homeowner just wants a lot of bright light. Typically, though, the primary areas to have bright light are the kitchen, garage, laundry room and closets. The office is debatable and is really about personal preferences. And one thing to remember about lighting is it's always possible to dim down bright lights. But put in too little light to begin with, and it's a lot of work to add more.
